Little Rock, Ark. | $450,000

A Craftsman house built in 1903, with four bedrooms and three bathrooms, on a 0.3-acre lot

This house is in the heart of downtown Little Rock, a few blocks from the Arkansas Governor’s Mansion. A pharmacy and coffee shop are also within easy walking distance, and Arkansas Children’s Hospital is less than five minutes way by car. The riverfront, where attractions include a food hall, a farmers’ market and museums focused on Arkansas history, is about two miles away. Another major draw in this part of the city is the William J. Clinton Presidential Library and Museum, in a 30-acre public park.

Size: 3,268 square feet

Price per square foot: $138

Indoors: A path flanked by mature trees leads up a wide set of steps to a covered front porch big enough to hold benches and a swing. The wood-and-glass front door opens into a foyer with a beamed ceiling and original hardwood floors that extend into a sunny living room on the right with a brick fireplace in the corner.

Original pocket doors separate the living room from a dining room with blue walls, white crown molding and an ornate hanging light fixture. Another set of doors leads from the dining room to the kitchen, in what was formerly a sunroom.

The primary suite, used by the sellers as office space, is just off the dining room, with two high-ceilinged rooms and a bathroom recently redone with an oversized shower and penny-tile floors.

On the second floor is a bright bedroom with hardwood floors and another next door with carpeted floors; across the hall is a bathroom with a claw-foot tub. At the other end of the hall is a third bedroom with a walk-in closet and an en suite bathroom. Nearby is a den with a black-painted brick fireplace and an attached sunroom.

Outdoor space: A wood deck off the kitchen steps down to the backyard below, where planter boxes hold an herb and vegetable garden. Across a swath of lawn is a chicken coop. A covered carport at the back of the driveway has room for two cars.

Taxes: $2,345 (estimated)

Dallas | $450,000

A 1930 bungalow with two bedrooms and one bathroom, on a 0.1-acre lot

This property is in the Bishop Arts District, which is often likened to Austin or Nashville, as it is filled with stores selling vintage clothing and housewares. North Bishop Avenue, the neighborhood’s main drag, is four blocks away, putting the home within walking distance of numerous dining and drinking options, including a New Orleans-inspired jazz bar and at least one speakeasy-style bar. Kidd Springs Park, less than half a mile away, offers a swimming pool, tennis courts and a recently renovated recreation center.

Downtown Dallas is about a 15-minute drive; Dallas Fort Worth International Airport is about half an hour away.

Size: 1,090 square feet

Price per square foot: $413

Indoors: From the sidewalk, a paved path leads to the front door, set in a covered porch. The door opens directly into a living room with original pine floors and shiplap wall paneling restored during an extensive 2021 renovation.

Past a decorative white-painted brick fireplace in a corner of the living room is an open dining area and kitchen, a space big enough to hold a table that seats six. The kitchen has an island topped with butcher block sourced from a local antiques store and new stainless-steel appliances. Off the kitchen is a screened porch added during the renovation.

A short hall off the dining area leads to the two bedrooms and the bathroom. The bedroom at the front of the house has its own exterior entrance and is large enough to hold a queen-size bed, or a home-office setup. At the other end of the hall is the primary bedroom, which overlooks the backyard and has a walk-in closet with custom shelving. Between the bedrooms is a bathroom with walls covered in striped paper and subway tile; penny-tile floors; a vanity made from an antique cabinet; and a claw-foot bathtub with brass hardware.

Outdoor space: During the renovation, the backyard got a new fence and new lighting. Mature trees stand at the corners of the lawn. The garage holds one car, with additional room for storage.

Taxes: $5,112 (estimated)

Minneapolis | $450,000

A Tudor-style cottage built in 1927, with four bedrooms and three bathrooms, on a 0.2-acre lot

This house is in the Keewaydin neighborhood, a few blocks from Lake Nokomis, where the water-centric activities include kayaking and swimming, and the surrounding park offers a community center, a garden and a children’s playground. Also within walking distance is Minnehaha Creek Park, which has a creek-side trail that winds toward the Mississippi River.

Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport is about six miles away. Downtown Minneapolis about a 15-minute drive; St. Paul is 20 minutes away.

Size: 1,867 square feet

Price per square foot: $241

Indoors: The front yard is landscaped in grass, with steps leading up to the front door, which opens directly into the living room. This space has oak floors, a gray-painted brick fireplace and two windows facing the street. Through an arched doorway is a dining room with a midcentury-inspired light fixture, large mullioned windows and a glass door that opens to the backyard.

To the left is a kitchen with granite countertops and stainless-steel appliances, including a Bosch dishwasher. A staircase in one corner leads to the basement.

There are two bedrooms on this level, off a hallway extending from the dining room. One has a street-facing window; the other, across the hall, overlooks the backyard. Both have closets with original doorknobs, and each is large enough to hold a full-size bed. Between the bedrooms is a bathroom with a combination tub and shower and a white pedestal sink.

Behind a door in the dining room are stairs to the second floor, which holds the primary suite. The bedroom has two deep closets; the en suite bathroom has a glass-walled shower. Another bedroom, behind the stairs, could serve as a nursery or a home office.

The sellers use the finished basement, which has a built-in wet bar, as an entertainment room. A bathroom on this level has a tub and shower lined with white subway tile; next door is a combination laundry and storage room.

Outdoor space: The paved patio off the dining room is big enough to hold lounge furniture and a barbecue. A mature tree stands in the center of the backyard, and garden boxes line the wood fence along the perimeter. A long driveway runs alongside the house to a detached garage that holds two cars.
