A Gothic Revival house built in 1870, with three bedrooms and three bathrooms, on a 0.1-acre lot

Fletcher Place Historic District, one of Indiana’s oldest urban neighborhoods, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. This house is just outside the boundaries of the official historic district, where streets are lined with Italianate, Queen Anne and Gothic Revival homes built in the 1870s and 1880s. Nearby Virginia Avenue is a nightlife destination, with gastro pubs, an arcade-themed bar and a craft spirits distillery. The corporate offices and laboratories of Eli Lilly and Company are a five-minute drive; downtown Indianapolis is 10 minutes away.

Size: 3,960 square feet

Price per square foot: $115

Indoors: Brick steps lead from the street to the covered front porch. The front door opens into a foyer with a small chandelier. To the right, through pocket doors, is a living room with a fireplace and street-facing windows that have stained-glass accents.

Next to the living room, through a wide doorway with decorative trim, is an office that could also serve as a guest room. Directly across from the front door are double doors that open to a dining room with its original built-in cabinets and more windows with stained-glass trim.

Through the dining room is a spacious kitchen with new cabinets and appliances, multiple windows and a door to the backyard. Between the dining room and office is a full bathroom with a glass-walled shower. A mudroom is off the dining room and kitchen.

Two bedrooms and two bathrooms are on the second floor. At the top of the stairs is the primary bedroom, which holds a king-size bed comfortably and has a separate space that could be a working or reading nook, with access to a small balcony. The en suite bathroom has a walk-in shower and a double vanity.

Across the hall is a guest room with sloped ceilings and a diamond-shaped window. The guest bathroom, off the main hallway, has a blue vanity and matching mirror.

Outdoor space: The wood deck off the kitchen is big enough for outdoor dining when the weather permits. A few steps down is a backyard landscaped with grass and hedges. A detached storage shed could be used as a workshop; the driveway next to it has room for one car.

Cincinnati | $425,000

A Tudor Revival house built in 1927, with four bedrooms, two full bathrooms and two half bathrooms, on a 0.1-acre lot

The Clifton neighborhood in Cincinnati is popular with buyers who want more space without sacrificing easy access to city amenities. Many of the streets are lighted by original gas lamps and homes date to the 1920s and 1930s, giving the area a quaint feeling. A number of businesses are within walking distance, including a record store, a historic movie theater, a grocery store and several live music and entertainment venues. Burnet Woods, a 90-acre park with a lake for fishing and spots for picnicking, is about a mile away. Directly south of the park is the main campus of the University of Cincinnati, making the area convenient for university employees and students.

Size: 2,319 square feet

Price per square foot: $183

Indoors: A stone stairway from the sidewalk and another cutting across the front yard from the driveway rise to a red front door set under a stucco arch.

The foyer is carpeted, as is the living room to the immediate right, which has a stone fireplace flanked by built-in shelves and a row of windows overlooking the street.

Through a wide doorway is a dining room with hardwood floors. This space is open to a kitchen recently updated with new countertops and appliances. Off the kitchen is a small room that serves as a home office and laundry room, with sliding-glass doors that open to the side of the property. The space adjoins a mudroom with an exit that leads to the street. Also on this side of the house are a powder room and stairs leading to the upper and lower levels.

Three of the home’s four bedrooms are on the second floor. The primary bedroom is just off the landing, with hardwood floors and a large walk-in closet. The bedroom next door has a built-in desk; the third bedroom is large enough to hold a double bed. These three bedrooms share bathroom facilities off the hallway: a full bathroom with a combination tub and shower that has been attached to a half bathroom.

The fourth bedroom is on the top floor. One side is lined with built-in shelves; the other has glass doors that open to a Juliet-style balcony.

The lowest level of the house has hardwood floors and more built-in storage, as well as a full bathroom with a stall shower.

Outdoor space: A patio behind the house is big enough for a table and chairs. The rear lawn is framed by a low stone wall, with room for a gardening setup behind. The attached garage holds one car, with parking for another in the driveway.

Taxes: $6,804 (estimated)

Pittsburgh | $423,900

A 1912 rowhouse with two bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms, on a 0.02-acre lot

This house is in the walkable Central Northside neighborhood, about half a mile from Allegheny Commons Park, which dates to the late 1860s and includes open space, athletic fields and a large aviary. Sampsonia Way, about a block from this property, offers a number of folk art installations, some of which use rowhouses as canvases for paintings and poetry. Downtown Pittsburgh is also nearby: about 10 minutes away by car or 15 minutes by public transit.

Size: 1,750 square feet

Price per square foot: $242

Indoors: The front door, set on a small stoop, opens into a living room with hardwood floors, an open staircase in one corner and windows at the front and side that bring in natural light. The house was gutted and rebuilt by the sellers, who gave the main living spaces a contemporary look with a few antique accent pieces like the black-painted decorative fireplace.

Behind the living area is a kitchen with pendant lights hanging above an island and walls lined with subway tile and open shelving. The stainless-steel appliances are new, and there is room for a dining table opposite the island. Also in this part of the house are a powder room and a laundry room with a door to the side deck.

Two bedrooms and two bathrooms are on the second floor. The primary suite is at the back of the upstairs hallway. The bedroom, which has custom shelving and a separate closet, is big enough to hold a queen-size bed. A farmhouse-style door slides open to reveal the bathroom, which has a penny-tile floor and a walk-in shower.

At the other end of the hall is a guest room with recessed lights; next door is a guest bathroom with a pedestal sink and a combination tub and shower.

From the second-floor hallway, a ladder leads to the third floor, which the sellers use as a home office.

Outdoor space: The deck that runs alongside the house is new, as is the fence that encloses the property. A firepit is built into the deck, with space for seating around it. There is also room for a barbecue, either on the deck or on the stone path next to it. A small storage shed is at the back of the property. Parking is available on the street in front of the house.
