Atlanta | $499,000

A 1900 bungalow with two bedrooms and two bathrooms, on a 0.1-acre lot

This recently renovated house is in the bustling Berkeley Park neighborhood, near the West Midtown area. It is about a mile from The Works, a mixed-use development that turned industrial buildings into retail, dining and office space. Also nearby are breweries, restaurants and a recording studio, as well as several colleges and universities, including the Georgia Institute of Technology, Clark Atlanta University and Spelman College. Downtown Atlanta is about a 20-minute drive, depending on traffic.

Size: 1,268 square feet

Price per square foot: $394

Indoors: A paved path cuts through the front yard and leads to a porch with a warm red door that pops against the blue-and-white exterior of the house.

Part of the renovation involved the transformation of the foyer, which now has hexagonal-tile floors and benches along one wall. Beyond the foyer is a living room with hardwood floors, a white-painted decorative fireplace, black wainscoting and a black-painted ceiling.

The living room is open to the kitchen, which has new stainless-steel appliances and a new center island. The space is bright, thanks to a window over the sink and another in a door that opens to the back porch.

Off the living room is a short corridor that connects the bedrooms and bathrooms. To the left is the primary bedroom, which has an original (nonworking) fireplace in a corner, black-painted wood paneling, a leaded-glass window facing the front yard and a sizable walk-in closet. The primary bathroom next door has a walk-in shower lined with glossy black tile and a vanity with goldtone hardware.

The other bedroom, across the hall, has a custom-built wardrobe and enough space for a queen-size bed. The bathroom next door has a combination tub and shower.

Outdoor space: The back porch, off the kitchen, is covered, with room for a table and chairs. Steps lead down to the driveway and the backyard, shaded by mature trees. The detached garage holds two cars, and could be converted into a guesthouse.

Taxes: $3,195 (estimated)

Washington | $500,000

A two-bedroom, one-bathroom condominium in a 1908 building

This condominium is in The Watkins, a stately building with six units in the quiet Takoma neighborhood, on the border between the city and the state of Maryland. The building is less than 500 feet from the entrance to the Takoma station, a stop on the Red Line of the Washington Metro, which carries passengers to Union Station in about 15 minutes and to Dupont Circle in about 25 minutes.

On a nearby stretch of Carroll Avenue are a drugstore, a dry cleaner and a branch of Busboys and Poets, a local chain that combines a bar and restaurant with a bookstore. Downtown Silver Spring, Md., is about a 10-minute drive.

Size: 1,167 square feet

Price per square foot: $428

Indoors: This unit is one of two on the top floor of the building, and shares with its neighbor a front porch overlooking the mostly low-rise neighborhood.

The front door opens into a long hallway that extends to the back of the unit. To the immediate right is a living room with a wood-burning fireplace that retains its original wood mantel and mirror, as well as the original heart-pine floors, which continue throughout the apartment and have been refinished by the sellers.

Wood pocket doors separate the living room from a guest room that the sellers use as a den; it has another entrance off the main hallway. Next door is the primary bedroom, which has deep brown walls, white baseboards, a large window and a deep closet; behind it is a bathroom with a double vanity and laundry facilities.

At the back of the unit is a dining room with a built-in bar. Through the dining room is a kitchen with granite countertops, a white-tile backsplash and orange walls.

Outdoor space: Off the kitchen is a balcony with a gas fire table and a ceiling fan, making it a natural extension of the indoor living space in all but the most extreme weather. An assigned outdoor parking spot comes with this unit.

Taxes: $2,856 (estimated), plus a $653 monthly homeowner association fee

Tampa, Fla. | $495,000

A ranch house built in 1943, with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, on a 0.2-acre lot

This house is in a north Tampa neighborhood known as Tampa Heights that has become increasingly attractive to first-time buyers in recent years, thanks to its large stock of well-maintained midcentury ranch houses and its proximity to Tampa Riverwalk, a pedestrian trail that winds along the Hillsborough River, connecting parks, nightlife venues and cultural institutions like Tampa Bay History Center.

Tampa International Airport is about 10 miles away. Driving to the beach cities of St. Petersburg and Clearwater takes about 30 to 45 minutes.

Size: 1,538 square feet

Price per square foot: $322

Indoors: This house was renovated by the seller, who added termite-resistant siding, a new roof, double-paned windows and new electric and HVAC systems.

The yellow front door opens into an open living area with new wide-plank flooring that continues into the kitchen and dining area.

The kitchen has new cabinets, new appliances, a breakfast bar and Carrara marble counters. Behind the kitchen, off a laundry room with a tile floor, is a hallway that leads to the primary suite.

The primary bedroom is big enough to hold a king-size bed and a dressing area, and has sliding-glass doors that open to the rear deck; the en suite bathroom has a walk-in shower with walls covered in subway tile and a penny-tile floor.

The other two bedrooms are off the living area, and each is large enough to hold a queen-size bed. Between them is a bathroom with a new vanity and combination tub and shower

Outdoor space: The new deck in back offers ample room for grilling and dining. The backyard, connected to the deck by a set of wood stairs, is landscaped with grass and large enough to hold a swimming pool or a guesthouse. The driveway has room for two cars.

Taxes: $1,812 (estimated)
